Choosing the Right Google Business Profile Category for an HVAC Company
Your primary category is the single strongest factor in local ranking. Here is how to pick it, the common mistake that costs installs, and how to check competitors.
Short answer: “HVAC Contractor” for a full-service residential company, with secondaries for everything else you do. Primary category is the single most powerful individual factor in local ranking, and correcting a wrong one has produced gains of two to four positions within about three weeks.
It takes two minutes and costs nothing, which makes it the highest-leverage item in local SEO.
Why this one field matters so much
Google names three factors for local results: relevance, distance, and prominence. Your primary category is the strongest single input into relevance — it is how Google decides what you are before deciding whether to show you.
Everything else on your profile modifies that judgement. The category makes it.
The mistake that costs you installs
The common error is picking the category that describes what you do most rather than what you do overall.
A contractor whose volume is mainly summer repair work sets primary to “Air Conditioning Repair Service.” It feels accurate. It tells Google: repair shop.
The result is quiet. You stay competitive for “ac repair near me” and lose ground on installation and heating queries — which is where the ticket sizes are. Nobody notices, because you cannot see the searches you did not appear in.
“HVAC Contractor” is broader and covers heating, cooling, install, and repair together. For a full-service residential company it is almost always correct.
When something else is right
Not every contractor should use HVAC Contractor.
- Heating only, no cooling: “Heating Contractor”
- Commercial mechanical only: “Mechanical Contractor”
- Genuinely repair-only, no installs: the narrower repair category is honest and will match the work you actually want
The test is simple: does the category describe the full range of jobs you want to be called for? If you install systems and your category does not imply installation, it is wrong.
Secondaries — use them, but not all of them
Secondary categories add relevance without diluting the primary signal. Sensible ones for a residential HVAC company:
- Air Conditioning Contractor
- Air Conditioning Repair Service
- Furnace Repair Service
- Heating Contractor
- Air Duct Cleaning Service
- HVAC Contractor (if primary is something narrower)
Add what you genuinely do. Adding categories for services you do not offer produces calls you cannot serve, and Google can act on profiles that misrepresent the business.
There is no prize for filling every slot.
How to check what competitors use
You do not have to guess — categories are visible if you know where to look.
The straightforward way: open a competitor’s Google Business Profile and read the category shown under the business name in the listing. That is their primary. Secondaries are not displayed, but the primary is the one that matters most.
Do this for the three businesses ranking above you. If all three use HVAC Contractor and you use Air Conditioning Repair Service, you have found something worth fixing this afternoon.
Changing it
Google Business Profile → Edit profile → Business category.
Two things to know before you do:
Changes can trigger re-review. Usually quick, occasionally not. Do not change it the week before your busy season starts.
Give it three weeks. Category changes take time to settle. Do not change it, see nothing in four days, and change it back — that churn is worse than either setting.
What it will not fix
Proximity. Roughly 70% of top Local Pack placements go to businesses within one to three miles of the searcher, and no category fixes distance.
The right category makes you eligible for the right searches. Reviews, profile completeness, and on-page relevance are what let you win them further out.
The two-minute version
- Open your profile and read your primary category.
- Open your top three local competitors and read theirs.
- If yours is narrower than the work you actually want, change it to HVAC Contractor.
- Add secondaries for the rest of what you do.
- Leave it alone for three weeks.
That is the whole task, and it is genuinely the best-return two minutes available in local search.
