How to Get Your HVAC Company Cited by ChatGPT and Google's AI Answers
The research on what makes AI systems quote a source, translated into the specific changes an HVAC contractor can make to a website this month.
Short answer: make your pages quotable, verifiable, and machine-readable. The peer-reviewed research on this is unusually clear — adding credible quotations, concrete statistics, and cited sources to a page lifts its visibility in AI answers by 30–41%, while keyword stuffing does nothing. Most HVAC websites fail before that point, because a crawler cannot read them at all.
Here is what the evidence says, and what to do about it.
Why this matters now
The behaviour change is not hypothetical. According to BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, 45% of consumers used an AI tool like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity to find a local business in the past year — up from 6% the year before. Among 30-to-44-year-olds, the group most likely to own a home with an aging system, adoption reaches 64%.
Meanwhile, only about 25% of residential contractors report using AI in their business at all. The gap between how customers search and how contractors prepare is the opportunity, and it will not stay open indefinitely.
What the research actually found
In 2024, researchers from Princeton and Georgia Tech published GEO: Generative Engine Optimization at KDD, the main data-mining conference. They built a 10,000-query benchmark and tested nine different ways of rewriting a page to see which ones increased how much a generative engine quoted it.
| Tactic | Effect on visibility |
|---|---|
| Adding quotations from credible sources | up to +41% |
| Adding relevant statistics | about +37% |
| Citing sources | roughly +30–40% |
| Improving fluency and readability | +15–30% |
| Adding authoritative-sounding language | minimal |
| Adding technical jargon | modest |
| Keyword stuffing | none to negative |
The pattern is worth stating plainly: generative engines reward content that is easy to verify and easy to lift. They are assembling an answer and need a sentence they can stand behind. Give them one.
That also explains why the old SEO reflex fails. Keyword stuffing was the single worst performer in the study. Repeating “HVAC repair Springfield” fourteen times does not make a passage more quotable — it makes it less.
The part most contractor sites fail first
Before any of that matters, a crawler has to be able to read the page.
A large share of contractor websites are built on WordPress themes or page builders that assemble content with JavaScript after the page loads. Google’s own crawler can render JavaScript, but many AI crawlers do a simpler fetch. If your services and service areas only appear after a script runs, a meaningful share of what visits your site sees an empty frame.
Check this yourself in thirty seconds. Open your homepage, then view page source — the raw HTML, not the developer inspector. Use Ctrl+F to search for your phone number, one of your service names, and a town you serve. If they are not there, they are not reliably visible to the systems now answering your customers’ questions.
This is the single most common failure we find, and no amount of content strategy compensates for it.
Five changes that actually move the needle
1. Answer the question in the first two sentences
Generative engines pull passages, not pages. Research on citation mechanics found that position matters enormously — text quoted in the first part of a response carries far more weight than a mention buried later.
Write the direct answer at the top, then explain. A page titled “How much does AC replacement cost in Destin?” should say what it costs in the first paragraph, not after 600 words of throat-clearing about how every home is different.
2. Put real numbers on the page
“Affordable pricing” is unquotable. “Most residential AC replacements in our service area run $6,500 to $12,000 depending on tonnage and ductwork condition” is quotable, verifiable, and specific.
Numbers were the second-strongest tactic in the research for a reason. They give a system something concrete to attribute to you.
3. Write the sentences you want repeated
Somewhere on your site there should be a plain, declarative statement of what you do, where, and what makes you different — written the way you would want an assistant to say it aloud.
We provide 24/7 emergency HVAC service across the 30A corridor from Destin to Inlet Beach, with no after-hours surcharge for maintenance plan members.
That is one sentence containing service, coverage area, availability, and a differentiator. Compare it to “Your comfort is our top priority,” which contains nothing.
4. Add JSON-LD schema
Schema markup states in machine-readable form what prose only implies: that you are a LocalBusiness, specifically an HVAC contractor, serving these named areas, offering these named services, with these hours.
At minimum, publish LocalBusiness on your homepage, Service on each service page, and FAQPage on any page with a question-and-answer section. This is not speculative — it is the format search engines and AI systems both already consume.
5. Build the off-site signals
AI systems disproportionately cite sources they already trust. Analyses of AI citations consistently find user-generated platforms near the top — Reddit is cited at roughly 40% frequency across major engines, and Wikipedia accounts for a substantial share of ChatGPT’s citations.
You are not going to get a Wikipedia page for a twelve-truck HVAC company. But local news coverage, a well-maintained Google Business Profile, real reviews, and genuine participation in local community forums all feed the same trust signals.
What to expect, honestly
This is slow work. A site rebuild changes crawlability immediately, but citation behaviour shifts over months, not weeks. Anyone promising you ChatGPT visibility in thirty days is guessing.
Two more caveats worth knowing:
Optimizing for one engine does not optimize for all. One audit found only about 11% overlap between the domains cited by ChatGPT and those cited by Perplexity. They weight sources differently and always will.
Citation share is volatile. ChatGPT’s Reddit citation share reportedly fell from roughly 60% to 10% in six weeks in late 2025 after a single parameter change upstream. Build on fundamentals — readable pages, real information, genuine authority — rather than on any one platform’s current preferences.
The short version
Make pages a machine can read. Answer questions directly and early. Put real numbers in. Write sentences worth quoting. Mark it up with schema. Earn mentions elsewhere.
None of that is a trick, which is precisely why it keeps working when the tricks stop.
