What Is Answer Engine Optimization, and Does an HVAC Contractor Need It?
AEO, GEO, and SEO explained without the jargon, what the peer-reviewed research actually found, and whether any of it matters for a local contractor.
Short answer: it is optimizing to be quoted rather than clicked, and yes — but not as a separate project. Answer Engine Optimization is what you call SEO once the result is a paragraph naming two or three businesses instead of ten links. The work overlaps heavily with good SEO. What is new is a small set of tactics with measured effects.
Here is what the terms mean and which parts are real.
The three acronyms
SEO — being found in a list of links. Ranking is the goal, the click is the prize.
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) — being the source an engine quotes when it answers directly. Includes featured snippets, which predate AI by years.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) — the same idea specifically for generative systems: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google’s AI Overviews.
The distinction matters less than vendors selling three separate retainers would like. In practice they are one discipline with a changed endpoint: the answer, not the link.
What the research actually found
This is not guesswork. Researchers from Princeton and Georgia Tech published GEO: Generative Engine Optimization at KDD 2024, built a 10,000-query benchmark, and tested nine ways of rewriting a page to see which increased how much a generative engine quoted it.
| Tactic | Effect on visibility |
|---|---|
| Adding quotations from credible sources | up to +41% |
| Adding relevant statistics | about +37% |
| Citing sources | roughly +30–40% |
| Improving fluency and readability | +15–30% |
| Authoritative-sounding language | minimal |
| Keyword stuffing | none to negative |
Every tactic that worked makes a page easier to verify and easier to lift. Every tactic that failed was about appearing authoritative rather than being checkable.
That single finding is most of what you need. A generative engine is assembling an answer and needs a sentence it can stand behind.
Does a local contractor need this?
The honest answer depends on one number, and it has moved fast.
According to BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, 45% of consumers used an AI tool to find a local business in the past year — up from 6% the year before. Among 30-to-44-year-olds, the group most likely to own a house with an aging system, it reaches 64%.
Meanwhile only about 25% of residential contractors report using AI in their business at all.
So: not yet the majority of how you get found, but no longer marginal, growing quickly, and almost entirely uncontested in most local markets.
What it actually involves
Very little of it is exotic.
Be readable by a machine. Many AI crawlers do a simple fetch without executing JavaScript. If your content only appears after scripts run, a meaningful share of what visits sees nothing. View your page source — the raw HTML — and search for your phone number. If it is not there, nothing else on this list matters.
Answer the question early. Engines lift passages, and position within the response is weighted. Put the answer in the first two sentences, then explain.
Put real numbers on the page. “Affordable pricing” is unquotable. “Most residential AC replacements here run $6,500 to $12,000 depending on tonnage and ductwork” is quotable, specific, and checkable.
Add schema markup. JSON-LD states in machine-readable form what prose only implies: you are an HVAC contractor, in these towns, offering these services.
Earn mentions elsewhere. These systems lean on sources they already trust. Local news, a maintained Google Business Profile, real reviews.
Four of those five are things a competent SEO would tell you anyway. That is the point — AEO is mostly SEO done properly, plus a bias toward being quotable.
What to ignore
llms.txt. Widely sold as an AI-search essential. Google’s Gary Illyes has confirmed Google does not support it and has no plans to; John Mueller compared it to the keywords meta tag. Monitoring of over 500M AI bot visits found 408 that requested one. Publish it if you like — it costs twenty minutes — but do not pay a retainer for it.
Anyone selling AEO as a separate product. If a proposal has an SEO line and an AEO line with different prices, ask what specifically differs. Usually nothing.
What to expect
Slow. Site structure changes crawlability immediately; citation behaviour shifts over months.
Two caveats worth carrying:
Optimizing for one engine does not optimize for all. One audit found roughly 11% overlap between domains cited by ChatGPT and by Perplexity.
Citation share is volatile. ChatGPT’s Reddit citation share reportedly fell from around 60% to 10% in six weeks in late 2025 after one upstream change. Build on fundamentals rather than any platform’s current preference.
The short version
It is SEO with the finish line moved. The research says be quotable, be specific, cite things, and do not stuff keywords. The rest is the same technical hygiene that has always mattered — it just pays out somewhere new.
